i hope it happens

lloll shut up

with all due respect, judgment day IS very likely indeed, though it may have nothing to do with god coming down and judging. unlike in the cold war where i'm sure neither the US nor USSR was willing to blast each other and the world apart, one genuinely religious terrorist with modern WMD could trigger this all off. Who knows, the end might really be a nuclear war between religions in the middle east, except there'll be no god to say hi to after. i would join those 57%.

I think the world is definitely trending to secularism, some nations like Japan where it has already happened and smoothly and others like the US where I think more than likely there will be some sort of future trigger event, or sequence of events. Which will create a clear delineation between the fundamentally religious who wish to incorporate their faith into every aspect and the those who will operate their religious beliefs seperately from all else and I think the later will win out.

You're right, he does look more like Epicurus.

indeed!

bah, no, Dan Dennett doesn't look like Socrates, but he does look a lot like Epicurus (the long beard and fatherly appearance), and I think Dan Dennett would enjoy that comparison, because they both have similar values, that of friendship and to lead a life free of the terrors brought on by many religious beliefs. (not all religious beliefs, mind).

Who do you mean by "they?" Muslims? Shiites or Sunnis? Christians? Catholics, Protestants, Mormans? Hindus? Scientologist s? Your trying to use Pascals wager which is flawed in too many ways to fit in these limited posts. Basically the big flaws are it's not free to be a believer (costs $, time and forcing bad choices) and it's not a dualist result. (as I pointed out with all the religions) One could as easily ask, what if your wrong?

I superlove Dan Dennett. Could he be our greatest living philosopher? He's so understated it's difficult to notice his brilliance. I can't think of a single philosopher more lucid - you barely notice that what he's saying is of major significance because he's not confusing you - I think people expect to be befuddled by philosophy.

What if they are right??

It may make sense to us...but if you think about the general irrationality of populations as a whole, you will find it is often the most implausible mode of thinking that will take highest honors. Although I do agree it will be some sort of deism, it will be the most irrational one (since this is the one people are most likely to believe).

57 percent - hell that is SCARY!!

Sort of... As an anti-theistic atheist, I think atheist/agnostic and deist are the most respectable positions (and of course free thinker, skeptic or whatever else you want to call not-collecting stamps) :)

...agreed! ;)

Deism is the future!

Since the LHC came online I have been checking it out on the web. It really is astounding. Why would we have gone through all of that trouble and have spent all that money if people really didn't believe the Universe was 13.5 billion years old and not 6000 years old? On the other hand, what would you expect believers in the Genesis story to say about the LHC? Maybe: 'When the Bible was written one billion meant 2K' or 'What came just before the big bang? The finger of God on or about 6000BC.'

YOU'RE A FUCKING LOSER

by the way im sorry for your pea sized consciousness, you will be in for a rough ride soon.take care and well there isnt much hope for you,but i hope you have a swift painless death so you can try harder again next life.. good luck.

you're a fucking loser

i think meditation is the key to happy healthy world. quantum physics is just finding out now (the last 100 years) what vedic religions have known for many thousands of years.

I am not an Atheist by far but this guy has some pretty good points especially considering people are making up new religions which are more or less cults to get answers in there lives. Which is essentially damaging to our way of life.

I'm reading his book " Breaking the Spell". ANd it is very thought provoking. It is what I was looking for. Very scientific approach. Even though I liked God is not great, and the God delusion, this one is WAY better. He has a good approach, even though I would never use the term "brights". I love you Dan!

That's because chritianity was able to morph into many diferent schools of thought, thanx to freedom of religion. In America we are allowed to question our religious traditions. They are not, for fear of death. Hopefully.. freethought will be able to invade their culture, and not the christians. Fighting irrational thought with more irrational thought, is not gonna help anyone get better. Freedom of the thought is very precious. Religion steals that from people, unknowingly. Tragic.

MANBEARPIG!!!

He's trying to look like Socrates . . . lol.
